Biomedical research of  Chlorella Sorokiniana

  • Study on lowering blood cholesterol and treatment of diabetes mellitus.

Over a three-year period between 1997 and 2000, Drs. Su I-Jen and Yu Chung Chian of Medical College of National Cheng-Kong University conducted human and animal tests showed that Chlorella Sorokiniana is effective in reducing blood levels of triglyceride and cholesterol. Preliminary results also showed that it has efficacy in treating metabolic syndrome such as diabetes mellitus. It found that Chlorella Sorokiniana contains high concentration of y-Linolenic acid and Omega-3, 6 unsaturated fatty acids.

  • Chlorella Sorokiniana contain high concentration of PPAR-y PPAR-a ligands (agonist) and effective for metabolic syndrome and fatty liver.

In 2002, Dr. Chao Yu-sen's PPAR research group of National Health Research Institute found that Chlorella Sorokiniana contain high concentration of factors that activate PPAR.. Dr. Su Yi-Jen of Clinical Research Section of National Health Research Institute further confirmed that Chlorella Sorokiniana contains high concentration of factors that activate PPAR-a that clearly improve fatty acid metabolism in the liver.

  • Chlorella Sorokiniana has immune modulation and anti-inflammation activity and is effective for arthritis and wound healing.

Dr. Su of Clinical Research Section of National Health Research Institute found that Chlorella Sorokiniana could inhibit macrophage cytokines and tumor necrosis factor-a, TNF-a.    It can modulate immune and inflammation.   Preliminary study by Professor Lee Yu-yun, Dermatology section of Medical College, National Cheng-Kong University showed that Chlorella Sorokiniana is effective for psoriasis.

The medical efficacy of Chlorella Sorokiniana is most likely related to the high concentration of activating substance in the Chlorella Sorokiniana such as PPAR-a and PPAR-y.    Preliminary results also showed that Chlorella Sorokiniana also contain Phycocyanin, which is effective in inhibiting viral growth and could be effective in preventing influenza.

  • Chlorella Sorokiniana have potential anti-cancer efficacy.

Chlorella Sorokiniana possess high potential in preventing and treating several kind of cancer since it has high concentration of agonist for PPAR-y and PPAR-a.  Preliminary in vitro study on cancer cells, Chlorella Sorokiniana inhibit the growth of liver, lung, esophagus, colon and prostate cancer cell lines and leading their death. In animal study, Chlorella Sorokiniana inhibit the skin tumor growth induced by DMBA.
